"Don't **** With People's Pay"...
Intro...
'Don’t “MESS” with people’s pay' is a watered-down version of what a former CEO, COO (Chief Operating Officer), and Global Head of Sales Development from the U.S. shared with me earlier this week…
I say 'watered down' because the original word started with ‘F’ and ended with ‘K... and is probably a bit too explicit to say, take your guess…
Anyway, we’ll come back to this in a second…
It’s 9:47 pm, and I’m sitting at my kitchen table (just stuffed an apple pie and custard down me) and I thought
‘Hmmmm’, It’s been a long week (seriously I am SHATTERED…)
And there's been so many awesome takeaways, lessons, wins, and learnings...
Why not share what’s been happening with the world…?
Heck - even if 1 person ends up reading this first (proper) blog post, that’s 1 person better off…
So, let’s dive in…
Your. Pay. Matters...
If you’re an employee, manager, entrepreneur, or someone who gets paid…
This reminder is for you…
Compensation 101 - “Never ‘MESS’ with people’s pay…”
The words a Global Head of Sales Development leader shared with my team and me in London on Monday…
Sounds simple? So what’s the big deal, Danny?…
Well, imagine this...
You’re busting your backside off 9-5 (dare I say sometimes 6pm+) Mon-Fri…
It’s finally payday, you’re excited to see the four/five-digit sum of money to drop into your bank account…
Only to greet your pay-check with a raised brow, thinking “WHAT… this isn't right”
Annoyed, frustrated, angry...
Whatever the emotions, you wouldn’t be smiling...
Especially if you’ve got bills to pay, mouths to feed and expensive kids…
In fact, a 2022 Twitter survey found 72% of people had been paid incorrectly at some point in their careers...
Made worse by the fact some had been incorrectly paid more than once, and others NOT even realised they'd been paid wrongly, ouch...
Thought that stat was bad, check this...
In a survey of 251 HR and payroll managers in companies with 1000+ employees in the UK...
12% of large companies paid their employees incorrectly or late 7-9 times with 8% confessing to doing so
over 12 times...
Men lie, and Women lie. Everyone lies. Data Doesn't...
Conclusion
On the brighter side, what can you and I learn from this?
When one day you find yourself responsible for other people’s income…
- Pay them on time
- Pay them the correct amount…
- BONUS- if they’re an absolute 'A Player', pay them more or promote them…
Simple. No. Exceptions.
And if you think your employer owes you money or the payout is off…
Especially if you’re in a sales type of role,
Check your compensation plan, do the math, and ask the question if the numbers are off… We’re human, mistakes happen… so be forgiving (unless you're in that 8% who's had it 12x now...)
Anyway…
I was in London 4/7 times this week. The most I think I’ve ever been...I cannot lie, it was fun, countless learnings, and my body hates me.
I’ll share more from this week in a later blog post…
Now it’s 10:07 pm, so this actually took me 20 minutes…
Half a glass of Komboocha left to help get rid of the bloating, and it’s time for bed...💤
Have a productive week ahead and stay grateful.
(P.S. - I’ll aim to write up 1 of these each week to begin… open to feedback, let me know if this was insightful or not, I’m learning & open to feedback...)
(P.S.S - In case you forgot, 'Don't **** with people's pay' ;)
Peace,
Danyal✌🏼
